Dr. Marcy Thurmond is a highly respected music educator with over 30 years of experience. Her exceptional leadership has earned her numerous accolades, including Teacher of the Year honors in 2005, 2017, and 202, and the prestigious 2023 Atlanta Public Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year award.
Dr. Thurmond has been instrumental in creating an arts-rich educational environment, notably through
her leadership roles in program initiatives such the ArtsNow program, Fostering an Arts Rich Education and the Atlanta Public Schools Elementary Honor Chorus. She has demonstrated her dedication to supporting, developing and keeping
Effective Teachers in Every Classroom by sharing her extensive knowledge and passion for arts integration and conducting professional development courses for novice and veteran teachers. In 2018 she authored and self-published a curriculum guide for teachers entitled, What's the Cake? Teaching Music Across the Curriculum Can Be a Piece of Cake.
Dr. Marcy's passion for arts integration has enabled her to take on a leadership role in Douglas County through the establishment of Integrative Arts Creations, Inc., a non-profit organization focused on enhancing academic and artistic achievement through arts integration. Her vision is to cultivate young creators aiming for careers in the arts industry. Currently, she is advancing her brand as a facilitator of creativity with the launch of “The Connecting Point with Dr. Marcy,” a social media discussion platform, as well as consulting firm, Dr. Marcy’s Connections, LLC.
Dr. Marcy holds a BA in Music from Morris Brown College, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Coppin State University, and an Ed.D. in Teacher Leadership from Walden University. She firmly believes that every individual has a distinct purpose and can contribute to solving global issues through their inherent talents and creativity. Dr. Marcy is committed to facilitating the discovery of passion and purpose in others, empowering them to become effective and engaged citizens within our global community.
